Yellow StreakMature

Azzy walked into the rehab section of Fawcett Memorial hospital.  Everything was ready for Sebastiao to come home.

When Elsie dropped her off after the trip to Disney, Azzy got the message on her machine that her husband was in the hospital.  Azzy panicked, and broke all the speeding laws to get there.  When she ran into the hospital, he was lying so pitifully in bed, and she started to cry.

A nurse took her out, and soon a doctor came over to explain what had happened.  Someone beat him, and set parts of him on fire.  They had to amputate his hand.  They had to graft skin to his shoulder.  He was beaten up otherwise, pretty badly, but not so bad that he was in any sort of critical condition.

Then the police came, two hours as she was sitting beside his bed, holding onto his left hand.  Did he have any gambling debts?  Did he owe anyone money?  Detective Sigala said that it looked a lot like a beating for extortion.  Azzy was absolutely shocked.  She couldn't think that Sebastiao would have gambling debts.

He awoke while she was there.  Vicki had come over bringing Azzy's kids and her own.  The kids thought it was neat that he had lost a hand.  Azzy thought it was horrible.  Sebastiao only said that he didn't know what happened, that he had fallen, and that's all he remembered.  Then he looked at Azzy, his eyes filled with tears.  "I'm sorry."

Azzy had no idea what he was talking about.  Vicki shooed the kids out, and Azzy just stared at her husband, who looked away and said no more, fading back into sleep.

He was in the hospital for a week, and then transferred to the rehab center.  He was fitted for a prosthetic hand.  The kids took to calling him Mr. Claw - behind his back, because when Steven called him that, Sebastiao gave him such a look of hate, that they never called him that again.

Now his rehab could be done outpatient, so they were going to discharge him.  She had the whole house sparkling clean, and was ready to recieve him.  She went directly to his room and stopped short.

Everything was gone.  The cards the kids had given him, his special cups and bowls and forks.  She did a 360 degree turn.  Confused, she stepped out and grabbed the first person walking by.  "Where is Sebastiao DeMedieros?"

The CNA looked inside the room.  "I don't know, ma'am.  Ask at the desk?"

Azzy nodded - she was so stupid, why didn't she think of that.  She went over to the desk and stood there for a minute.  Then her phone went off.  She fished it out of her purse and stared at it - it was her house.  She flipped it open and walked away from the desk, ignoring the dirty looks of the nurses.  "Hello?"

"Azzy?"

"Sebastiao?  What are you doing there?  I thought I was going to--"

"Listen, Azzy?  I'm going to stay with my brother for a little while."

She stopped walking.  She was still on the unit, still talking on the phone.  She didn't care that it was illegal.

"Sebastiao, why?"

"I can't be with you anymore.  After everything I did to you, I can't stay with you."

"Everything?  Everything what?  What are you talking about Sebastiao?"

"I can't.  I'm sorry.  Good bye."  He hung up.

She didn't realize she was screaming his name into the phone until a nurse tapped her on the shoulder and told her she was.

The End
