The Prequel, Chapter Seven

"Are you sure we should be doing this?"

Eve rolled her eyes at Alexander. "Come on, it's just a stroll in the gardens."

"Yeah, at night. Night, Eve. It's a scandal, and you know it!" Alexander exclaimed.

The words sounded odd, coming from him. Usually, Alexander was the type to push the limits as far as he could, but tonight, he didn't feel right about going for a walk with Eve. Yes, he'd gone for strolls at night with Miriam, but Miriam was different. Miriam was innocent and beautiful. One look at Eve, and Alexander knew she was completely different from Miriam.

Alexander, who was conversing with Eve from the window in his bedroom, shook his head. "I'm just not so sure it's a good idea."

Already, Eve was stomping her foot impatiently. "Come on! It's just a walk! Besides, I have a surprise for you. You'll like it alot!" She tossed a wink over her shoulder at Alexander, who prayed - actually prayed - that Eve wouldn't get them into trouble.

Finally, Alexander nodded his head. "Okay, I guess I'll come. But we'd better be back before too long. I got caught sneaking out a couple years ago, and my parents haven't gotten over it completely. They don't really trust me."

Eve's lips twisted into a smile. "I don't really trust you, either."

Alexander was offended but tried not to show it. "Thanks, Eve."

Laughing, Eve closed the window behind Alexander after he got out. Alexander groaned. "How am I supposed to get back inside now?"

Eve shrugged. "I don't know. Sorry. I wasn't thinking."

There was something sinister going on; Alexander could sense it. One look in Eve's eyes, and he knew it. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he took a deep breath. "I just don't think we should be doing this."

Eve's eyes were wide with unveiled surprise. "Really, Alexander, I never thought you were a goody-two-shoes," she said, voice annoyed. "Fine, then. Go back inside. Go pray or something useless like that. I was excited to show you my surprise, but now, I guess I won't."

Alexander felt guilty for letting Eve down, but not guilty enough to follow her into the darkness. "I guess I'll see you later, Eve."

Alexander was about to open the door when he heard Eve following him. "Wait," she said breathlessly. "I didn't think you'd actually leave me."

Worried that his parents would find him and Eve together, Alexander's hand paused on the doorknob. "Not now, Eve. I shouldn't have even entertained the possibility of sneaking out tonight."

But before any other words could be spoken, Eve leaned forward and planted her lips on Alexander's. Within moments, she'd wrapped her arms around him in an almost desperate manner.

But the worst part was exactly what Alexander had been wanting. For a moment, he stood, frozen. A thousand emotions ran through him, and he knew that what he was about to do would be deadly.

He returned the kiss.

And it was terrifyingly wonderful. He held Eve in his arms, heart exploding in the beautiful scandal of it all.

Suddenly, the door swung open. Alexander stumbled back, pulling away from Eve.

"Alexander Marcus Hale, what have you done?!" came the very last voice Alexander wanted to hear.
