She listened for a moment, but, as she suspected, there was no noise coming from anywhere that could have been the culprit behind her sudden jolt from slumber. She looked at her clock to see that it was only 7 a.m. Jack was long gone by that time, though his side of the bed was still a little warm.
Anya got out of bed, walked across the cold tile flooring, and looked out the window. The sun was newly risen and it was making the lake shimmer like she had never seen it before. For a moment she got back that old feeling of wonder and awe at the beauty of this place. The one she had the first time Jack had brough her here to visit. At that time she had never thought she might be living here one day. But, circumstances as they were had made the hasty departure from the city a must.
