Blessed Final Number

“Alright cousin," Ezra said to Henry, "make this quick. We got a schedule to keep.”

I froze in place, my breathing growing more and more shallow. This couldn't be happening, this was all too surreal for me to really register.

Henry raised the gun, calming his trembling hand.

He fired one of those lethal points into Ezra’s right arm, and another into Lily’s left arm.

They collapsed, grimacing against the pain.

I rushed to their sides. I was so frantic, yet they looked so peaceful. So serene.

My breathing was just as audible as theirs, only they were breathing sighs of relief.

I shook my head in disbelief.  “It’ll be okay Paulie,” Lily said, reaching up to touch my face. I nodded, trying to hold myself together, to be strong for them.

Ezra chuckled breathily.  “We did it,” he whispered, raising his hand weakly for a high-five.  Lily returned it.

“I can’t believe you two…” I began, still shaking my head in disbelief.

“Can’t catch one without the other,” Ezra explained.

“We came in together, & we’re going out together,” Lily finished.

To my surprise, they began to weakly sing.

"If I was a rich man with a million or two," Ezra began softly, "I'd live in a penthouse... in a room with a view... And if I were t'be free, those dreams could come true... I wouldn't have nothin' if I didn't have you..."

Lily smiled, lacing fingers with her brother as she continued weakly: "For years I have envied... Your grace and your charm... everyone loves you, you know?  I must admit it, brother, you always come through... I wouldn't have nothin' if I didn't have you..."

They began to fade, but they went on together, “You and me together, that’s how it always should be. One without the other don’t mean nothin’ to me, nothin’ to me…

They faltered.

They slumped.

I took a deep breath, allowing my head to fall to my chest.  My hat fell to the ground between amidst tears.

The End
