Accursed Necklace

Recommend

I staggered about, terrified. There were so many people, jostling every which way.

I looked up, immediately regretting it.  All the huge buildings towered over me, making me feel smaller than ever.  And it looked like it was going to rain.

The last thing I wanted was to be on the run and be caught in a downpour.

I began to walk faster, to breathe in shallow gasps.  I clutched at my necklace, that accursed necklace.  It was the reason I was in the position I was; the reason I was running for my life.

I drew my long coat in closer, wishing I could disappear.  Every face I passed was a threat, every stranger an enemy.

An enemy who knew this city better than I.

Someone who could corner me, render me helpless.

My eyes darted this way and that as I crossed the street in the middle of a grey pack.  As I turned the corner, I saw them: Two dark men scanning every face for a glimpse of mine.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. The vulnerability, the fear, the anguish, the hate, overwhelmed me.

I fainted.

g2LaPianistaIrlandesa This is a series I had posted previously on Ficlets with OrangeOreos. I think part of the beauty of it is the shifting POV; it gives different perspectives on the same event, in a sense. I enjoyed this so much the first time, I figured Orange and I could post it again (and perhaps expand on parts) here. (As of 1/26, this is now posted in its entirety.)
