I felt Tiger lying next to me on the bed. I smiled and turned over to give him a hug.
“I love you,” I whispered in his ear.
“I love you too, Alecia.” I snapped my eyes open and stared at a boy with white hair. Wait, wasn’t this the new guy at school? What was he doing in my room? As I started at him his eyes turned black and his face shifted. His mouth grew wider and his teeth sharper. His eyes sunk into the sockets until they were gone. Shadows seemed to cling to his skin. He smiled at me and lunged.
I bolted up out of bed. I could feel someone’s hand on my arm so I turned around. Sam was looking at me with worry in his eyes. He asked me if I was OK and I nodded, too scared to speak. He went downstairs to make me some tea while I got ready for school. I was still shaking when I walked downstairs. Sam handed me the tea. I took a sip and started walking to school. The sky was cloudy, it was about to rain. I smiled up at the sky. Good, maybe some rain will help my mood. I even brought my camera today so maybe I will get some good shots.
I walked through my homeroom doors the same time the late bell went off. The teacher sent me dirty glares as I sat down. I was completely covered in mud and rain water. If he doesn’t like it he should buy me a car. Our teacher was Mr. Walker and he was one of those people you forget about once you see them. He had mousey brown hair, hazel eyes, and wore a gray business suit. He also walked like he had a string attached to the top of his head. He never slouched or bent down at all.
I quickly tuned him out as he started to talk. Instead, I looked at my classmates. I was deciding whether a girl with curly, blond hair and freckles would look good with a park background when I noticed someone that made my blood run cold. The boy, Slate, was staring at me from across the room. He looked exactly the same as he did in my dream, before he changed. I couldn’t have memorized him that well after only seeing him for one day could I? I bit my lip and turned around. I spent the rest of class messing around with my pencil and keeping my eyes on my desk.
When the bell went off I bolted out the door, I didn’t want to talk to the boy if I could help it. I heard him call my name so I sped up. Normally I wasn’t this jumpy after a dream, I had some crazy ones, but this dream felt o real. It felt like a warning. I just couldn’t figure out what it was warning me about. Him turning into a monster or was he a stalker? Either way I wanted to stay as far away as possible until I figured it out.
The rest of the day was normal apart from the fact I was avoiding Slate and Clover as much as I could. It was almost impossible to do, considering they had every class with me. I blocked them out the rest of the day trying to figure out how I could go to the library in the next town over. I was about an hour by car so I couldn’t walk. Mom and Sam have work and I didn’t have any other people to talk to. Maybe I will catch a bus. I planned it all out in my head and was going over it one more time when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned round and look up at Clover’s gray eyes. She smiled weakly at me and motioned for me to follow. Everyone else had left to catch the buses. I was nervous to be alone with these siblings for any length of time.
I followed her into the library. Slate was sitting in one of the seats backwards. I pulled out a seat opposite of them. Slate started to talk but I interrupted.
“Will this take long? I have to walk home and it’s about to rain again.” I didn’t really care about the rain, I just didn’t want to stay here any longer. I could feel the hair on my arms rising. Something was about to happen and I didn’t want to be here longer than I had to.
“It will be quick and it’s important. I need to know if you can remember anything a week before yesterday?”
I couldn’t, but how was this any of his business? “Look I really should leave now.”
“Dang it Maribelle, sit down and listen.” I felt my blood run cold. Maribelle was my middle name. Only Sam and my mom knew it though. No one even called me by it. It was my dad’s name for me.
“What did you call me,” I asked. I could feel my heartbeat increase and it took all I had not to run as fast as I could away from him screaming.”
“I called you Marib- I mean Alecia.” I could see he knew that he messed up.
“How do you know my middle name?” He got up and I ran. I knew he could probably outrun me but I was going to try to run anyway. I ran out the front doors as fast as I could. I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up. A man with black hair and brown eyes looked at me. He flashed me a badge.
“My name is Detective Bane. Is there a problem here?” I cast a look over my shoulder but shook my head no. Clover and Slate were standing inside the building glaring at the detective. I looked up again at the detective to see if I could recognize him. He was smiling at the siblings. I looked at his eyes and noticed they turned a bloody red if you watched them enough. I could feel the hair on my arms raising more.
“Alecia, why don’t we go to my car and talk?” My ears automatically picked up the mistake.
“How do you know my name?”
“You told me.”
“No I didn’t.” I pulled out of his grasp and tried to figure out where to go. More ‘detectives’ were surrounding the building. The only other option was in the library itself but Clover and Slate were still in there. I noticed a side door and went to go through it. The door opened and an old man was standing in the way. I eyed him warily and took a step back. His amber eyes were full of sympathy.
“Why don’t you come with me? I am sure I can explain what is going on. If you are not ready to listen yet I will take you home of course.”
I remembered my dream flashing back up. “Are you even human?” He smiled sadly and shook his head.
“No one here is human except for you. Now if you come with me I will explain it all.”
“Do not go with them Alecia, they are demons. All they do is eat human souls.”
“You have a lot to learn Bane if you think that is all we do.” I could feel my fear increasing. I had to decide now? Who was I supposed to pick? I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
“When in doubt, listen to your heart, it will guide you to the truth” I could hear my dad’s favorite saying swim around my head.
I opened my eyes and looked around. “I want to hear both of the stories. I only want you two near me. Everyone else leaves and I will decide when it’s over.” I gestured to Bane and the old man. They both nodded and told everyone else to leave. The old man smiled at me again then went to sit down on a bench.
