Kathryn was waiting for her outside.
“I can’t believe you told everyone,” she began to say, but clutched her throat. Anna felt immediately guilty and lifted the curse from her friend.
“What the hell was that?” Kat demanded as soon as she could speak. “What did you just do to me?” Her throat was red and sore.
“It’s to stop people spreading it,” Anna admitted. “It seems to have been more effective than I expected.” Kathryn looked at her like she was mad.
“What can’t you do?” she said. Anna shrugged.
“I don’t know, to be honest. I can teleport now, and I’m planning to try shape-shifting next, but I don’t know if it’ll work.” She looked wistfully into space; perhaps having visions of the opportunities that shape-shifting would open up.
“Show off,” said Kathryn, pushing her playfully. They laughed together and hurried to the canteen. It was too late to avoid the rush, but hopefully the queue wouldn’t have got too long, with any luck.
“This would be so much easier if I could teleport, but too many people are watching,” Anna said, annoyed at the slow pace of the students in front of them.
"But you can't," Kathryn reminded Anna, who nodded and groaned.
"I know," she said. "I was just SAYING!"
As they finally entered the canteen, and joined the ever-growing queue, they saw many other Year 10 students staring and pointing at them. Several whispered to friends in other years, only to clutch their burning throats at the sudden pain.
"I maybe overdid that slightly," Anna thought, but decided not to lift it just yet. If she did, her story would be all over the newspapers within days.
"Don't you feel sorry for them at all?" Kathryn asked. Anna thought for a moment, trying to work out just what it was that she WAS thinking.
"Not exactly," she said. "I pity them, but it's necessary. I don't want to lose everything that I've worked for, which includes my privacy." She glared meaningfully at a nearby girl, who was trying to write down what she was trying to say, and found her hand being gripped with exceedingly painful cramps. All down the line, students were looking at her with something other than indifference, and Anna decided that, though cruel, she was almost enjoying the sensation. After all, she had been a nobody for too long. Now, everything was changing.
