Dancing in the Dark

In the dark her voice fell on its face as if she were lying in a pine box lined with a brocade of midnight, but she continued to hum along with her new friend. She recognized his voice clattering like a bag of broken rocks, and she floated there in the crossing harmonies until she felt that she was nothing but sound. As the tune progressed, he came closer, dancing his hopping jig from side to side behind her. She couldn’t see him, but she could feel his voice hiccup with each hop and she giggled softly.

The tune stopped.

She went cold, fearing she had offended the raven man. She held her breath, and listened to the blackness.
