This is a story about two people who thought they had nothing in common except coffee. Little did Cass know that he life was about to be turned around...
‘I can’t do this anymore,’ and that was it. Five little words and it was all over. It wasn’t until several weeks later that I found out why; he had a girlfriend the whole time. Three whole years of meaninglessness. I decided then and there that I wouldn’t let anyone else in, I’d moped enough. I was sick of being used, sick of being an amusement to people I barely knew. If they didn’t care about me why should I care about them?
I began by overtaking people on the footpath, then I stole a parking spot from an old man just as he was about to take it. I stopped buying birthday presents and demanded more from my family. I knew it wasn’t their fault but I was trying to get a message across – this girl doesn’t take shit from anybody. I wasn’t going to let myself get hurt again. Trust should be earned not handed over like charity. The only person I could trust was my best friend Lauren.
‘You know that guy’s been staring at you since we’ve been here. I don’t know what he’s doing behind that laptop but it’s creepy. I mean just look at his face!’
‘I don’t really care, guys are pervs. And who says he’s not looking at you?’
Her laugh quickly replaced the look of exaggerated shock on her face, ‘are you kidding me? Look at you, we both know you’re the good looking one.’
‘I know, I’m just teasing,’ and I stuck out my tongue cheekily.
After a long pause, she said, ‘You’ve changed Cass.’
‘Yeah after that thing with Brett I decided not to care anymore, you just end up getting hurt otherwise.’
‘Blocking people out can be lonely too… just be careful okay? Something might happen when you’re not looking, trust me I’ve been there.’
‘I am, don’t worry.’
