It had started out a normal day, really. Umber caught a ride to school with her mother, since she didn't rightly care enough to get a license or car. Sure, she was a senior but what did it matter? A bus would take the place of car rides with her mother soon enough.Just like every other day, she went to Latin, but something was different. For one thing, a guy with wings, honest to god leathery bat-like wings, was sitting in the back of the class he was unnoticed by her peers, which seemed impossible. With wings that big, and a robes that unorthodox he should have stuck out like a sore thumb. At the moment, he was thumbing through one of the Latin 1 books.
"Such a funny compendium" he muttered.
"Cren?" She gasped.
"Oh, it's you. Where are we? And how did I get here, for that matter?"
Umber shrugged helplessly and grabbed the Eastlander's wrist. She tugged him out of the room and out of the school as quickly as she could manage. "This can't be happening." she mumbled to herself.
"Oh, but it is. You see, something's very wrong. One could say that there was a disturbance in the force."
"Please don't quote Star Wars. You shouldn't even know what star wars is!"
"Oh, was that a quote? I heard one of the children in the hall say it and thought it was rather apt."
But Umber didn't bother wasting any time, wherever Cren was, June was sure to follow. She ran towards a small gathering of trees on the edge of the campus and found she had guessed right. There she was, tucked into the nook of an old oak, whittling away at something with a wickedly sharp blade.
"June! Get down here."
"Oh, hiya boss," June waved as she nimbly hopped from the tree. "Was wondering when Cren would find you."
"What are you two doing here in reality?"
The pair looked at each other and shrugged.
"Darned if we know." they said in unison.
June picked at her teeth with the same dagger she had just been whittling with as she gestured vaugely off into the distance. "Oh, some other guy showed up here too. He ran off cursing? Said something about 'grabbing a pair of smokes and a bottle of vodka'."
