The sirens wailed through the streets alerting everyone of the ambulance’s arrival. As they rushed her to the hospital, a tear rushed down Curtis’s left eye. He’d never cried before in his life.

A doctor walked out of the ER to present the family and Curtis with the news. “Is she going to be ok?” Curtis anxiously inquired. “I am sorry, but might as well start picking out coffins ma’am.”  The doctor responded. Sarah’s mom broke down in tears, “but what happened? She’s just a child! She’s just my baaaaaaby!”her voice breaking.

Curtis froze. “Your daughter’s kidneys have both failed, and she need a new one in the next two days in order to survive, and right now getting a kidney particularly for her blood type is next to impossible.”

Curtis felt week in the knees. Did this doctor just suggest that Sarah’s death seemed inevitable at this point; only a few hours after she’d just confessed her love to him? He felt his whole world crumble underneath him. At this point he was willing to do anything including to give up his own life for her.

“Is there anything I can do?” he asked, overcome with grief.  “Well you could find someone with her blood type AB to give her a kidney; of course you’d have to kill them first.”The doctor chuckled. Curtis got that look in his eyes; that look of courage and determination, of focus and pain. “Don’t go getting any ideas now son." The doctor laughed, patting Curtis on the back.

Curtis pulled his hand off angrily, warning him never to make such jokes where his better half was concerned. He groaned in anguish and screamed “WHY!!!!WHY ONLY NOW? WHHHHHHHHHHHHHY!”He fell to his knees and prayed with all the strength in him. All the people at the hospital stared blankly at Curtis, aggravating him even more.

He could no longer bear the agony and rushed out of the hospital, knocking over a few tables. After spending a few hours at the church, he had prayed and asked God for guidance and for wisdom as to know what to do. He finally felt like the answer had come down to him from heaven. Wiping the tears from his eyes he reminisced about the hour that he’d spent with Sarah earlier and the love they’d kindled.

He lifted his broken body and spirit and headed back to the hospital .Looking straight at the doctor, he asked solemnly, “found a donor yet?”  “Am sorry but AB is a very rare blood …..” “Forget it, am ready. “He answered sniffling and wiping his eyes. “Ready for what?” the doctor asked mystified. Staring into the doctor’s eyes for a few seconds, Curtis smiled. “I am ready to give my kidney, my blood type is AB anyway, and if she dies, I die. They say you can live with only one kidney anyway, no?”

“Listen young man…..” “No YOU listen!” Curtis had that dogmatic characteristic about him. Once he’d made up his mind there was no stopping him. She’s getting my kidney whether you like it or not!”He said sternly. “Now hurry we aint got much time.”

In a few hours both surgeries were done and Sarah was conscious again. After informing her about Curtis, she was quite agitated, particularly because he wasn’t making as speedy a recovery as she was. Leana walked into Curtis’ room and held his hand .As she looked at the monitor, there seemed to be a consistent beeping sound indicative of flat line. Sarah, who sat on a wheelchair next to his bed gave an alarming shriek and yelled, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”As he seemed to gradually fade away into the other world. A few doctors rushed in shocking him several times, there was still no change. “He’s gone.”A doctor said softly.“….time of death…….” “Noooooooo!” Sarah screamed.

A teardrop rushed down her face as she touched his feet. It fell on his left foot. Immediately the monitor came back on. There was a pulse. ”Leana, look, there’s a pulse!” Sarah cried. She praised God and screamed. “I guess your love was all he needed. “Answered a doctor, as Curtis slowly opened his eyes. “Baby?” he called weakly. “You’re ok.”
“I love you.” Sarah answered. “I love you.” He answered. “What a love!” Leana smiled. “A love to die for.” Sarah answered with a smile. “A love to die for.”
