I held tight and looked up at the boys. My eyes widened. I saw Dan’s body falling away from the sturdy trunk of the tree. I tried to shout. I tried to scream but nothing came out. His mouth was open as well but I couldn’t hear his calls.
Everything slowed down. Nothing seemed real as we watched him fall. I reached out my hand and my finger tips grazed his pale cheek. We locked eyes and the fear I saw there, I knew, would haunt me forever. Silent tears wet my warm skin. I smudged them away with a grubby hand readying myself for what was about to come. The autumn leaves caught him. His body was suddenly still.
