A Dove Among CrowsMature

Drake stepped off the bus and into the dim morning light. Smoke drifted in lazy circles towards the star speckled sky, blown from the parted lips of those gathered outside. There was no fanfare, no American girls hanging off of him as they cheered for the newest 'flavor-of-the-month' - the British foreign exchange student.

Drake simply stood there, staring at St.Meadows High. The dawdlers in the shadows snickered at his nice clothes and vacant expression. Seeing this, he snapped out of his reverie, picked up his duffel bag and marched inside, a determined look chiseled on his face.

I myself leaned back against the brick wall of the building, smirking to myself.

"Wow, he looks dumb," Emily commented, shaking her head.

"Give him some time - he could be one of us," I reminded her. She should know by now that looks can be deceiving.

She shrugged nonchalantly, gazing into the middle distance with pupils much too big for her brown eyes. Far too big. Induced by prescription pills swiped from her house. Or perhaps a nearby convenience store.

"Let's go meet him," I lurched away from the wall, stuffing my hands in my jean pockets.

"What? Are you crazy?" Emily ogled me, her already huge eyes growing wider.

"Why not?" I folded my arms, glaring at her.

"Because....he's one of them!" She gasped exasperatingly.

"Not yet. Maybe we can save him. Before it's too late,"

The End
