"I see you two seem to know each other," said Mrs Taylor. Del was strongly reminded of one of her brother's ex-girlfriends, Tessa, who had been from Holland.
"It's complicated," said Spook. "We-"
"It's all right, I don't need to know the details." The housemistress looked them up and down once. Del realised with a shock that they were still hugging and let go of Spook immediately. She didn't want people to get the wrong idea. "I'll make sure your rooms are near each other. We wouldn't want you to be on your own when you're new."
Delorfinde smiled gratefully. "Thanks, Mrs Taylor," she said. Spook looked surprised, so Del turned to her and hissed, "Yes, I've done my homework! I think I know the names of most of your teachers now..."
"You creepy stalker," replied Spook. "Now, come on! There are so many people I want you to meet. You've heard so much about them, but you don't know what they look like, obviously. Come on!" She grabbed Del's hand and pulled her towards the knot of girls watching them curiously.
"How come you're all here already?" said Del, confused. "I thought it was the beginning of term?"
"That was yesterday," replied Spook. "So we all got here before you. I did wonder why they left an empty room next to mine, though ..." She thought for a minute, then resumed her quest to drag Del the remaining five metres.
"All right, I'm coming!" said her friend, laughing and freeing her hand from Spook's grip. "Now, let's see how many I recognise."
The first to be introduced was a girl with dark hair. "Del, this is-"
"Pip," said Delorfinde immediately.
"How did you know that?" Pip, too, was astonished.
"I know everything," Del told her. "Well, no, I don't. But I stalk Spook a lot on facebook and I saw you in her pictures. Your surname's Williams, isn't it?"
"Yes..." said Pip. "Okay, that's just creepy. It's like you're psychic or something, even though I know you're not...."
"Are you sure about that?" said Del, smiling dangerously, so that they could see every one of her sharp teeth.
