Delorfinde was sitting in her kitchen when her parents broke the news. "I'm afraid we're moving to Australia." Just like that. No warning.
"What? But I can't go! I've got my GCSEs! Their schooling system is complete different, it's going to screw up my whole education. What are you doing?!" She was apopletic with rage, jumping up and down.
"Calm down! It's okay, you're not going to be coming with us." Del's mum, Penny, wiped her eyes. Was there a tear there? It was hard to tell.
"Then what will happen to me? I can't live alone..." Delorfinde said, now quieter. She sat back down. This was a shock. No warning at all! Couldn't they have, well, prepared her a little bit? Just wait till she told Spook...
"You're going to boarding school. The school's in Dorset. We've looked it all up, and it looks very good. The musical side especially, which is very important to us. We sent them the results of your last exams and you've got a partial scholarship..." Blah, blah, blah. Del zoned out. Then she zoned in.
"Did you say Dorset?" she exclaimed. "What was it called?" They told her. She fainted.
"Del! Del, what is it?" Her parents were shaking her as Del came round. She looked blearily up at them.
"That's where ... that's where Spook goes." So this was to be her future. Actually, she could make this work to her advantage. "So, when will this happen?"
"We leave at the end of the first week of September." Her mother stared worriedly. "You don't mind, do you?"
"No," said Delorfinde immediately. "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean it like that! Of course I'll miss you ... but this is going to be EPIC!"
