Will it Last?

"I think it's about time we let the past be the past and move on. We can't stay mad forever."

I watched his reaction carefully, my heart in my throat. This was all new to me, and I was actually scared of his reaction. But then his face took on a resemblance of a cat on caffeine that had just been startled. It was hilarious. I couldn’t stop the laughter that spilled from me. And a few moments later, he joined in. Both of us laughing till there were tears in our eyes. I glanced over at the double doors and caught our reflections in the glass. "Look at us," I gasped through the laughter, nodding my head in the direction of the double-doors. He glanced over and seemed to study what he found there. Then I froze, seeing a third reflection, a girl whom I did not know, but apparently HE did. "Rosetta," he groaned, turning. I too turned, watching the proceedings.

“Vash, we were supposed to have lunch together. I put it in your diary.” I raised my eyebrow at this statement, and looked at Vash. This 'Rosetta' couldn't have whipped HIM, yet she was acting like she owned the world.

"What diary?" he replied coolly, leaning back on the door, which was locked. I glanced between him and Rosetta, eyes guarded. This exchange was causing me to get worked up. I didn't even know this girl and her vibes were already causing me to dislike her. She stepped closer, hemming HIM in... 'I still cant seem to get around not using his name... it's been so long,' I thought to myself, slightly sheepish. I noticed how he stiffened as she stepped closer. It was obvious he disliked the position he was in.

“The one I gave you,” she said, voice clear. “So you wouldn’t forget when we had lunch plans.” She was obviously annoyed with HIM, which made me smile, though I kept it a private smile. I didn't want to make a bad situation worse. This might possibly be the girl that one dude in the hallway was after HIM for. Big possibility, knowing HIM. I gave a small start, surprised with myself. I still knew him, I had still been watching him all these years. The realization hit me like a bucket of cold water.

"Ah, that one," he muttered, digging it out of his satchel. It was pink. I snickered quietly. He flipped the thing open and asked for a pen. The other girl, Rosetta, smiled and handed him one. My eyes flicked back and forth between the two as they exchanged words. I kept quiet, hands in my pockets, and shuffled my feet occasionally. After a minute of scribbling he said, "Right, I’ve penciled you in for a gentle let-down at 12:45 and then a blunt refusal at 12:46 because I am pretty sure you just won’t take no for an answer. Can you make it?"

I was shocked. Here HE was, turning down Ms. Gorgeous. OK so maybe I didn't know him. She stared at him, same as I did, but she was not only shocked, but disbelieving. She quickly regained her composure and snatched the pen from HIS hand and walked off, calling back "Loser," over her shoulder after a couple of paces.

I waited till she was out of earshot and turned to him, eyebrows raised. “You know you haven’t changed,” I said. “You’re still a jackass.”

“And you’re just a little ray of sunshine,” he commented back.

I softened a little, understanding the jab to be non-threatening. This was all new to me, but I knew it was the same for him. I would have to keep that in mind in the future, if this lasted beyond this afternoon... which maybe it would? I glanced once more at Rosetta's retreating figure. "So what now?" I asked quietly, a breeze ruffling my hair

The End
