Yet

I watch her from a distance,
behind locker doors,
behind corners,
careful not to get too close
afraid of getting hurt.

She is beautiful,
smart, talented,
and a significant part of my life.

She is gentle,
she is sweet as sugar,
she is friendly to all.

She isn’t a friend,
She knows me well though
from all the whispers
from all the scribbles in the books and all the bathroom stalls
and from all the notes thrown across the room.

I’m the weirdo,
the one who is quiet
the one who daydreams during class
the one who is different

But she doesn’t judge me
she doesn’t laugh at their jokes
she doesn’t push me or hurt me
she gives me a small sweet smile
and an occasional wave

Yet, I still watch her from a distance,
behind locker doors,
behind corners,
still careful not to get too close
still afraid of getting hurt.

The End
