We Will Rise

Inspired by the recent Colorado theater shooting.

 From the ashes of inhumanity
To the dust of a place we call home,
We wait for the justice we hope to see
In the future that’s so unknown.

You stomp on our dreams in the dirt and the rain,
With the mud puddles licking our thighs.
But we will stand here together and outlast the pain,
And just like dust, we’ll rise.

We’ll rise in the world that’s filled with crime
And laugh at death in the face.
And from our eyes we will wipe away the grime
Of a world that is so filled with hate.

We will rise from the tragedy that binds us
We will rise from the fire burning our eyes
We will turn away from the door slammed shut
Because, like smoke, we will rise.

The End
