Unfading Flower
What will your first word be? Or the earliest thing you can call to mind?
Soon you’ll not need your mom and me; you’ll be leaving childhood behind
So we’re savoring each day from now till then; we’re so glad you’ve come to stay
You’ll start walking—we don’t know when; now we’re just storing up each smile you cast our way
Unfading flower, sleep in peace and dream of days yet unseen
Of the chances you’ll take, the journeys you’ll make to places you’ve never been
You’re loved with a love that nothing in time could ever hope to destroy
You’re an unfading flower, our precious daughter, our ever beautiful Joy
When you awake, your mother’s face will be beaming down at you
And should you start to cry, I'll be standing by, still figuring out what to do
Your innocent ears haven't heard of life's fears—the time to hate or to kill
Your innocent eyes haven't learned to despise; God grant they never will
Unfading flower, sleep in peace and dream of days yet unseen
Of the dances you’ll dance, the animals and plants in places you’ve never been
Know you’re loved with a love that nothing in time could ever hope to destroy
You’re an unfading flower, our precious daughter, our ever beautiful Joy
When will your first step be? Whenever it is, we want to be there
To catch you, should you fall, so you’ll never doubt that we care
We’ll teach you, but also learn from you as time goes by
You’ll show us things in our soul we thought had long since died
Unfading flower, sleep in peace and dream of victories that you’ll take
Know we’re never far away when you first feel the pain of heartbreak
Keep remembering you’re loved with a love time can’t ever destroy
You’re an unfading flower, our precious daughter, our ever beautiful Joy
