They Said to Write a Poem

Please, read this out loud - or at least, read this using the voice in your head. There are a lot of rhyme schemes you don't catch, if you read it voicelessly.

They Said to Write a Poem

So they said to write a poem.
A well-rhyming, bright-shining poem.
With words woven to leave my heart open, and all our wounds run dry.
Yeah, they said to write a poem, but I don’t know why.

Yeah, they said to write a poem and let the words run their course
To write what my heart says, without any remorse
But if your words aren’t poetic, and you’re feeling quite pathetic, tell me
What good is it to write a poem that sounds pretty.

Yeah, they said to write a nice poem, but I try so hard to be nice
That there’s no nice left in me to write in a stupid poem –
Yeah, they said to write a poem, but there’s no pretty left in me.

They say the purpose of writing is to let your heart stop fighting with your mind through rhyming
Yeah, they said to write a poem, but all I can say is, you’ve got bad timing.

They say words will make you better
But don’t they just become fetters, if
You don’t have any words to record, in the first place.

They said to write a poem.

They said to write a poem, but there’s no poeming left in me.
They said to write a poem.

There’s no poeming left in me.

The End
