The White Man Says So

The poem was written as a history assignment in the perspective of a sharecropper.

You see that black sharecropper over there?

We both been working here one year

And we are one and the same.

When I have hardships, he does

When he has food, I do.

We are inferior and why?

Because the white man says so.

You see that white sharecropper over there?

We both been working here one year

And we are one and the same.

We are both people,

Both have feeling.

And both work hard for our money.

But he is better than me and why?

Because the white man says so.

And you see that bull over there?

We have both been here for one year,

But we are not the same.

He is an animal: I am not.

He has no future, but I do.

But we are the same, like brothers almost,

And why?

Because the white man says so.

The End
