The Lovers

He spoke

with whispered words

as the stars above them shimmered

and the boat below her rocked.

He spoke

of a future

they would never get to have

and a past he would never forget.

He spoke

of their childhood

secret dances in the moonlight

and their first stolen kiss.

He spoke

of their dreams

of a house in the woodlands

a life without any fear.

He spoke

of his sorrows

the day she was found missing

the day she turned up again.

He spoke

of his tears

collapsing by his front door

of still seeing her everywhere.

He spoke

his final goodbyes

to the girl he would love always

as he pushed her, burning, out to sea.

The End
