The Little Match Girl

It’s so cold
I’m freezing-nothing to keep me warm
And I grow numb this season
My life just hanging on

I see flames alight and foyers so bright
Christmas cheer all around
But nobody notices a little match girl
Lying shaking on the cold ground

But there I lay still, cocooned in snow
With the starry night sky, the only warm glow.
I dream then of my family-
The past that was, and the future that could never be

Because they were all gone, not a single one to stay
Their angels had called them away
But come now, they did, with a brightness blinding
To take me away from this world

Their open arms, fulfilling embrace,
Beckoned me to leave this place
Leave the cold, the dead and hungry
To a Christmas they thought I deserved.

The End
