The Goddess

Recommend

One rainy day,
A goddess in silken wreathes
Appeared in a shower of light
And brought me to my knees

I trembled, awestruck
Of her most radiant beauty
Hoping not to incur her wrath,
I asked who she might be

She gently smiled,
And my heart leapt a mile
She extended her hand, and said,
‘Don’t fear me, child.’

My body obeyed her,
And up I rose.
Up from the sodden ground,
The sodden ground which I loathed.

‘My fair goddess,’ I cried,
Tears running down my face.
I bowed my head,
‘I am not worthy of such grace.’

She smiled once more,
And gently took my hand.
Her slightest whim
Became my life’s command.

She took her other hand
And waved it at the sky,
The clouds slowly dissipated,
And a bird let out its cry.

‘You must pardon my appearance,’
I implored, in humility.
She answered, ‘it is not through fault of your own,
And so I do not judge thee.’

‘My fair goddess,’ I breathed.
She embraced me slowly,
And held me near and tight,
Her presence, ever so holy.

‘It hurts so, my goddess,’
I whispered in her ear.
She put her lips on my own,
And softly smothered my fear.

‘You must be tired, my child,’
She whispered delicately.
Nodding in assent,
She soon let me see

We were in no wood,
And so I asked, ‘Where are we?’
It was no place that I knew,
And so she answered, ‘In time, you will see.’

And as I looked
‘Round where we were,
I took in her beauty,
Making my vision blur.

Tears sprang from my eyes,
And met the white ground.
She asked, ‘Why do you cry?’
I answered, ‘From your very sound,

‘From your angelic face,
To the hands that hold me so,
You have saved me, my goddess.
To you, everything I owe.’

She kissed me once more,
And I returned in due.
She then drew back,
For on my back, wings grew.

‘You are my angel,’
She whispered to me.
‘Surely you jest,’ said I,
‘Without you, I could not be.’

She grew a wing,
Much like my own.
And from my shoulders,
One less wing was shown.

‘We need each other,’
Explained she,
‘For without each other,
Flight is an impossibility.’

‘I have never flown before,’
I slowly answered her,
‘But for my first time,
With you, I would adore.’
