Swimming Upstream

The layers of life
I’ll cut with a knife
Superficiality
Say what you see
Her shirt is tight
Her face, a fright
She does it wrong
A stupid song
I follow their whims
On the surface I swim
Sucking for air
Not much there
I play their game
But I am lame
And I have to fight to get back to my pool
Swimming upstream, looking a fool

I knew a time
When life was mine
Waves of beauty
Music and poetry
Selfish and proud
Truth allowed
Standing firm
Open to learn
Magical games
Changing lanes
Beating heart
Devoted to art
Naturally flowing
Silvery glowing
And I have to fight to get back to my pool
Swimming upstream, looking a fool

If you could just give me a minute to think
I swear I’ll decide from which pool to drink
The water is rising, and I feel buckled down
If I sit still too long, I can’t help but drown
And I have to fight to get back to my pool
Swimming upstream, looking a fool
There, where the water is welcome at last
There, where I cry to meet my soul’s past

The End
