Remember

One hundred years ago

today

a war started that changed the world

a war that stole brothers

sons

fathers

uncles

and left families home to mourn.

It will be over by

Christmas,

they said cheerfully as they left home

to their sisters

daughters

mothers

aunts

I'll see you sooner than you will think.

But Christmas came and

went

With no sign of an end to the war.

And then families

friends

lovers

everyone

received letters to say they had gone.

One hundred years ago

today

a war started that changed the world

and today we stand

remembering

mourning

commemorating

a generation that lost their lives so we could have ours.

The End
