she used to drink teaMature

She used to drink tea -
extra cream and honey;
now she drinks coffee -
black, two sugars.

You recognize the scars
but you don’t recognize the girl.

There used to be a light
hidden behind the veil of her
malachite eyes but now they’ve darkened
to mimic the color of the ocean during
a storm and you wonder
if she’s become chaos
instead of wonder.

You remember the day you left
but she squints at you, studying a stranger.

You used to drink coffee -
black, two sugars;
now you drink tea -
extra cream and honey.

The End
