In Absence

In the absense of your knowing,

a tugboat grumps along
half a person slumps against a wall

a thousand tiny particals glitter in concentric patterns
to the rhythm of the tamborine.

trapped in this moment, ignorant,
you forget the way people are
the way you are.

In absence of everything else you forget to be generous,
to forgive the dark sliver of tomorrow's pain.

The End
