That Lonely Barricade

We were on top of the world.
We could see for years -
The perfect future, all laid out.
Note past tense.

We were students, schoolboys.
Never held a gun.
They shot at us, too fast.
One by one, we fell.

The red flag had fallen,
The barricade breached.
Our men fell like flies.
But we did not leave.

We could not leave.
This was our glorious revolution,
Shot to pieces
On that lonely barricade.

The End
