On Hastings

An impression left by one of the sorriest places in Canada.

No one wins this shell game
All shuffle and no soul
Nothing left
but one last bet
and a deck stacked against them

They play
for small change
but nothing will

Eyes on the prize
The Big Score
The Jackpot
Hit me again
But it's snake eyes
every time
That's how they roll

The lucky ones
cash out early
Like so many chips
they fall and

are forgotten

But more will come
to take their place
at the table
where it's all in
until the bitter end
which comes soon enough

The End
