Sleeping Beauty

Somehow I'm the prince in this scenario,
Slaying dragons to arrive at your thorny thicket,
a thousand ways to draw blood, it must be negotiated
with intelligence, with nerves of steel;
I persevere, because I'm the hero here,
and you are not easily won,
sleeping at the top of your tower,
unaware of my struggles beneath;
I persevere, up the lonely staircase,
my footsteps echoing my doubt, will he? won't he?
Not knowing if you'll awaken to my whisper, to my kiss,
and acknowledge my brave ascent;
But I persevere, as all princes and heroes do in fairy tales,
to win, to triumph, to conquer my beloved's heart.
