Normal

A poem I wrote last night.

Normal.

What do you think of when you hear the word?

Do you think of normal as being the same?

Not unique?

Dare I say,

Different?

Normal is defined as,

Being not abnormal,

Regular.

Being what society has told you to be.

Not abnormal,

Regular.

When people see a girl in a wheelchair,

Or maybe she has a tube in her neck

And they automatically think,

“Oh, she must have had an accident,”

Or, “Oh, she’s mentally retarded,”

Not regular.

Abnormal.

They look at her funny when she speaks,

Thinking, “Why is she talking?”

What they don’t know is that this girl,

The one in the wheelchair.

The one with the tube in her neck.

The one who is trying to make friends,

Wants so desperately to be like everyone else.

Like society wants.

Regular.

Not abnormal.

Normal.

The End
