No 'I Love You'

You were the one who called me

I answered on the first ring

I had been expecting you

Sitting by the phone like a lost puppy

If I had a tail, I definitely would have wagged it.

We always skip the pleasantries

No need for those when we have so much to discuss

I assure you I’ll be home before the end of summer

You say that’s fine, but your voice sounds funny

Like you have something on your mind

I want to ask what’s wrong

But you say you have to go.

Now we’ve finished our conversation

There is a pause

I’m shy so I wait for you to say it first

But all I’m left hearing is the dial tone

No ‘I love you’?

The End
