new places make me nervousMature

New places make me nervous,
but you never mention the shake
to my hands or the quiver in my voice
and something about your silence
is comforting.  I think of it whenever
I’m wandering the streets now,
whenever I’m someplace I don’t know
and the anxiety settles over me.
I stole your hoodie the last time
you spent the night at my apartment
and you can’t have it back.  I need it
for when the cold white walls become
foreign territory because I woke up
from a nightmare, or when my mother
makes me visit family out of state, or
when I get lost driving the interstate.
Darling, it’s you or the sweater.

The End
