Little Did I Know

It began in the eyes,

The fire in a glance

A brush of two fingers

Caused my sinews to dance.

A ripple of whispers

When we walked down the street

Sharing sweet laughter

As our bodies did meet

I was told to be careful

Too entranced to be warned

Such vanity was flattered

Never dreamt I'd be scorned

Then the news came

'He's engaged to Miss F-

For six months at the least'

My eyes wet, my ears deaf.

I tried to remember

Why did I not see?

Was I so blind

As to think he loved me?

Naive and too warm

I never felt less free,

Little did I know

It never was me.

The End
