These masks we wear

their colors of sunsets and skies

painted carefully across our cheeks

Red for the touch of love

Green for the hint of life

Black for the darkness of our hearts

Swirls of hues, the portrait of deceit

but no one will know, because no one will care

Content with their own

applying new layers to their plastic faces

a build up of nets

that hide the throbbing heart beneath

I'm okay

I'll be fine

The whispered words

we tell ourselves at night

while our tears drag down our faces

the intricate paint of our lies

ruining the masks we fight to perfect

when morning comes

we gather our colors

we stare into the mirror

and paint another face anew

The End
