Little One

I don’t know what you’ll look like,
Though I think I know your name,
I wonder if you’ll be the best
Of everything we became.

I know you won’t be perfect,
But to me you’ll always shine.
No, little one, you won’t be perfect,
But what you will be is mine.

I know even now I can’t imagine
How much I’m bound to love you.
Sometimes I let myself just dream
And care for you breaks through.

I’ve allowed myself to picture
Your face beaming up at me,
Your tiny fist around my finger,
Your gurgling squeals of glee.

I feel my heart begin to swell
With something close to pride
To see you with the ones who love you
All around you, side by side.

What more is there to life than this?
What greater gift to give?
I want to bring you, my little one,
My little gift who lives.

I don’t know what you’ll look like,
Though I think I know your name,
But none of it matters, little one-
I’ll love you just the same.

The End
