like the sky and sea

"Can you hear my footsteps echo in your sky? / Like my feet are thunder in the clouds that lie?"
A bit of a magical romance in which parallel universes are a horrible hindrance. Just dreamin'.

Can you hear my footsteps echo in your sky?
Like my feet are thunder in the clouds that lie?
This life separates us as far as can be
But none have there been quite as strong as are we.

We don't look similar in the mirror,
But we're so alike I have to shiver.
Our lives stand parallel to each other
But I'd never want to know another -

Not when I know how you feel when you're near.
Not when I know how it feels when you're here.
My eyes open wide when yours fall closed;
My lips sing the songs you've just composed.

And all those wishes I put in my heart
Reach you however, wherever you are.
But when I look over my shoulder
My hopes burn and blacken and smoulder -

Because you've never been there, never there and never will.
And yet I wait for you every day at my window sill,
because hope can't hurt, can it?
Love doesn't hurt, does it?

No. Wrong.
Because you don't belong;
Not on this side of the cosmic glass.
Not when you're present and I am past.

So we will thrive like the sky and sea -
Like ruinous storms on morning peace.
Breathe with me, darling, and watch your breath
fog up my face like the cloak of Death.

The End
