like ten thousand stars falling back to earth

like ten thousand stars falling back to earth,

or as a rainbow exploding into momentary light,

so my eyes were filled

with the descending sparks

of a far flung star-spangled fire.

we launch the rockets, we fire the cannonades,

we drape the heavens with wisteria of wonder,

we fill the air with our man-made thunder,

shocking our gathered hearts into collective gasp,

in psalms of oohs and hymns of aahs,

we lift our praise,

to the gods of might,

and our self-righteous right,

in showers of blessings

in blooms of light,

in sparkling shards of starlit hues

of red and white and regal blue.
