An Empty Cup

Tap a tap a tap a tap
Words jump off the keyboard,
Drops of water
Falling from an empty cup.
How long I've been here,
I could not guess.
Ages uncounted,
Eons unknown

For some stroke of genius
Some words of wisdom,
Or encouragement.

None come.

Tap a tap a tap a tap
Echoes of these cold walls
The meaningless musings of the prisoner
Trapped inside his own head
He cannot escape himself.

The world has gone on
Yet here I am
My mind wanders,
Far over field and hill
Deep oceans and tall mountains
Searching for some meaning
Some purpose.

None comes.

Here I sit
Drinking from an empty cup
No refreshment for my thirst,
No end to my wandering.

My cup is empty.

The End
