If Only

This Villanelle was inspired by remembrance day

On the eleventh hour we stand,
We stand to remember the dead;
I wished the clocks had ceased to move its hand

Our hearts go out to far-away land,
Where lives are taken and blood are shed;
On the eleventh hour we stand

We honour the soldiers fighting for the common man
Two minutes of silence and clear skies above our head;
I wished the clocks had ceased to move its hand

Rooted to our spot without any command
We pay respect for the fallen, with poppies white and red;
On the eleventh hour we stand

Blood on our land, blood we cannot understand
Let time stop 'til peace prevails and civility made;
I wished the clocks had ceased to move its hand

But war had to be fought to protect our homeland
And soldiers were given the go ahead
On the eleventh hour we stand
I wished the clocks had ceased to move its hand

The End
