If I Could Write as _________________ Writes

If I could write as the dragonfly writes

With shining wings upon still water

I'd give up all these earthly fights

To fly with him across the still still water

If I could write as the sea-snail writes

In curving lines in wet-white sand

I'd leave the work and boredom that bites

And slide along in the snail's happy land

If I could write as the farmer writes

With plow and seeds in warm brown soil

I’d stop my worrying on troubled nights

And trade the newness of life for my toil

If I could write as the comedian writes

Leaving trails of laughter with careful jokes

I’d leave this place to see new sites

And make people smile as one a fire stokes

The End
