Fading Footprints

You were footprints in the sand,
On a familiar Atlantic shore.
But like water cupped in these two hands,
You always left me wanting more.

It's nights like these I can't evade.
And I've never seen you so afraid.

Shaking with uncertainty,
Loosely holding on to me,
Did you ever expect this to be,
Where the less-worn path would lead?

We can't stand still, (We can't stand still.)
But I swear to you (Someday we will,)
Each take that long way back alone,
And together we'll finally feel at home,
And that's where we'll stay, (Where we'll stay,)
Long enough to call it love.
Enough to call it love.

I kept trying to stop the erosion,
That sought to wash you away,
But my fists couldn't fight this swelling ocean.
I couldn't hold on to a single day.

I find it hard to believe,
I was better off just to leave.

Shaken by uncertainty,
Never letting go of me,
I always knew this would be,
The hardest path that I could see.

We can't stand still, (We can't stand still.)
But I swear to you (Someday we will,)
Each take that long way back alone,
And together we'll finally feel at home,
And that's where we'll stay,
Long enough to call it love.
Enough to call it love.

Now you're nothing more,
Than these fading footprints,
And I'm chasing after you.

The End
