First Bat In Space
It reminds me
Of that childhood poem
"Twinkle twinkle little bat
How I wonder where you're at"
The official line
The bat did not survive
But who ever believed the powers that be?
Not you, I hope, and certainly not me
I'd rather believe
That little bat
Hung on to the foam with his fuzzy little toes
Found shelter from the flames as the rocket rose
Something about the way
The bat was made
Allowed him to thrive, to withstand
What NASA's billions must contend
I want to believe
Some strange, unknown fluke
Allows my bat to fill his lungs with air
Tentatively flap his wings while astronauts stare
I can imagine
If he could
He would have a smile on his funny little face
To have survived it! First bat in space!
