Cough Medicine

You remind me of cough medicine,

Nectar, all bittersweet, runny

Honey with a pharmaceutical

Sting, my face glowing from my spluttering

Embarrassment: trying to speak, syrupy tongue

Stuck to my cheek with the buzz of you,

Left giggly and reeling, my right

Mind all sealed off, as drugged

And blindly I reason with my heart;

Apart from the embers in

The aftertaste, I easily forget that

I need you because

I hurt.

The End
