Beautiful In Our Words

If only we could be as beautiful as our words

and then we would never be hurt

if only we could love like we say we will

then nothing could ever go wrong

If only we could be as enlightened as we whisper

these words are of greater men than I

must I tell myself more lies

If I could make my words into weapons

than I'd be a god for a day

What if poetry could be set into motion

then we would never question their devotion

but the truth always gets in the way

and these words are only a drop in the ocean

If only what we say and we do were the same

then we'd never know heartbreak and shame

then there'd never be someone else to blame

I'd run a million miles for you

but I know you could never run for me

if only we could be together forever

But love is flawed and we are broken

designed to imagine better lives

if only to feed ourselves to survive

What if poetry could be set into motion
