a beautiful mess

Oh how she wanted, how she longed

To slash her wrists again

And cut into her thighs

She would have done anything to make them see

The pain she made sure to cover up

You could see it when you looked in her eyes

How she’d been left out and shattered and heartlessly broken

All the needs left unspoken

Of that girl cast aside.

The girl who promised she’d be strong forever

The one that everyone just assumed was okay

And everything had to be so well put together

Because she made a point of making sure

Here needs were never on display

She was perfect

Her life was worth it

Or so everyone thought that they knew.

The people thought that they knew her so well

But they wouldn’t look past her exterior shell

Had they taken the time to watcher her layers unfurl

They would have seen

That this fine, pretty girl,

This girl was a beautiful mess.

She lay broken and bruised at the foot of the cross

And everyone could see how empty she was

Her vulnerability was propped up on display

And everyone could see her faults

Everyone knew what a sinful creature she’d been

They could tell by the way

That her tears fell when she cried

And her chest heaved hopelessly as she tried

To speak the words of sweet surrender

And her heart spoke the words that her lips couldn’t form

“Lord, please just come make me new

Redeem my life, take my past and transform

All the scars and the wreckage I’ve left in my wake.

Draw my messiness back up to You.”

And the Father was pleased

With the girl on her knees

And everything started changing that day.

The people thought they knew her so well

But they didn’t look past her exterior shell

Had they taken the time to watcher her layers unfurl

They would have seen

That this broken down girl,

This girl was a beautiful mess.
