High Walls

People, crammed together -- like animals, rotting
In the sewer, pressed against high brick walls,
Trying to escape and being punished, with whips
And guns, and finally the only escape: death.

Living like beasts in the mud and the squalor,
Unable to move away from the smell, the disease,
But suffering from conditions which made their lives
Only more miserable, painful and shorter.

The End
