The Ballad of Endurance

Our couple met as babies,
While new-made mothers prattled.
They cooed and smiled with widened eyes,
Seeing new toys to be rattled.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

Not long till their next meeting,
She in pink and he in blue.
An early sign of affection:
Her pigtail dipped in glue.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

Just three or four years later,
In “grown-up” playground games,
A prearranged relationship
And classmates chanting names.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

Completely new surroundings,
All new classes, teachers, work.
New classmates had them all summed up
In a single, knowing smirk.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

Then finally together,
As though their lives were fated
To take romantic turnings-
The rumourmongers sated.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

A long-lasting relationship
Blossomed further than foreseen,
Through libraries and lectures,
Long past the couple’s teens.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

They qualified together,
Threw their caps up in the air.
They congratulated their success;
His fingers through her hair.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

A house and a proposal
Followed soon to teary eyes.
Her joy exuding from her
With high, exalting cries.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

Through thick and thin supporting
One another in all things-
So endlessly amazed
By the happiness it brings.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

Elderliness befell them
But was taken in their stride,
For nothing could erode faith
Of that one man and his bride.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

But then her husband passed on,
The woman left alone.
Her bittersweet memories
Of her loved one who had flown.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

She stayed loyal to her vows,
Although death did them part,
But this was not enough to foil
Her ever-enduring heart.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

And then her time came also,
She departed with a smile,
To be reunited with her loved one:
Love had lasted all the while.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.

It is then with blissful harmony
They go forth in new endeavours,
For even death can never stop
A love which lasts forever.

Hers was the story of love through the years,
Rejoicing in happiness, weathering tears.
