Just an FYI to y'all, I'm having issues with my lead typing hand [as in, I may have some kind of RSI] so I may have to pull out. Depends what the doc says tomorrow. :(
@Gabriel- I'm assuming it's probably going to be the same as before- 500 to 1,000 words.
Several questions to anyone who thinks they can answer them. My first is, "will all of our chapters ahve to be connected to the previous one?" For example, my first challenge ended in a cliff hanger but for the second chapter, I was hoping to do it on a different area, in the same world but with a different environment/character/mood.
Second question. In terms of cataclysm's, would something like...oh say a massive industrial accident count? You know, the water's are polluted by some chemical, the plantlife is being poisoned by fumes and the animals are being slaughtered without any sort of reason save "pest control."
@mike_itong Yeah, I was kind of assuming that, too, but I wanted to make sure. If I don't hear differently, that's what I'll be shooting for.
As to your questions, I'm not sure about your second, but Jack sent us all an email that said this (among other things -- if you haven't read it, I'd check it out):
"Although this is a prose challenge, it is not a story writing challenge. Every single challenge you complete will have an aspect of descriptive writing to it, and each one will help build a larger setting. You do not need to create a plot, protagonists, antagonists, or anything else necessary for telling a story. Each completed challenge need only be related through place. Also, your entry does not need to have a plot hook at the end."
And I believe we can move to differing environments so long as we stick to the same world.
So another query coming your way guys: Are we supposed to title the new challenge as SPC:What's your name and in the main body of the entry, just head it with Challenge Two? Or is the title going to be Challenge Two? Please let me know.
Also, seeing the above posts can I safely assume that I can move anywhere around in my world, irrespective of my previous characters, and that is going to be permissible?
@weirdmagic This question has been asked before and here's Jack's answer verbatim:
you can move about the single world you are creating to different areas. so if Tolkien were part of this competition, he could complete the first challenge in the Shire and the second in Mordor.
no, you cannot switch entire scenarios. that means that Lewis wouldn't be allowed to complete one challenge in Narnia and another on Perelandra. the emphasis of this competition is on world building, and each challenge has been made to build upon the challenges completed before it. that means that it's also easier to stick with one setting in the long run.
As for chapter titles, I don't believe it matters all that much. As long as you post the next chapter in the same story as your previous one I'm sure we'll figure out that the second chapter is responding to the second challenge ;) Titling it "Challenge Two" would remove any doubt and if you'd like to do something like "Challenge Two: Clever Chapter Title Here" that would be fine, too. As long as you keep all of your entries together in one story so they can be found easily, I don't see a problem with titling each challenge entry whatever you want.
i'm unconcerned with length for this challenge, but you'd probably be best off with between 500 and 1000 words once more. the last two challenges will be significantly broader with a greater word count.
Archi quoted me correctly. as i said in my email, the only thing that has to tie your challenges together is place.
there are three definitions of the word cataclysm: a sudden, violent event; a sudden and violent change in the earth's crust; a great flood. so, the emphasis here is on it being both a sudden occurrence and one with an almost all encompassing scale. this even need not be natural, although most examples of cataclysms are.
as long as it is clear what the chapter contains, i'm not too particular about the specific chapter title. so again Archi is correct.
@Jack- Mmmkay so i may not be able to get my critique for the competition until next monday as I'm going to be gone for the weekend and won't be back until Monday (come to think of it, maybe even Tuesday). Is there any way i could critique Pheonix and Weirdmagic after the deadline? Or is that going to be a nu-uh and I will have to accept docked points?
@mike_itong, the peer reviews won't be due until noon on Wednesday by my clock, so it gives you until... about three in the afternoon on Wednesday, i think. you should be fine. should. if not, something miiiight be able to be worked out, but i can't promise anything.
@Jack- Thank you very kindly. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to complete my reviews by then, maybe even earlier if there's no traffic going back home. =D

I think that we can move around the same world, but those are my words, not Jack's, and thus liable to mean nothing.
